The new grille and headlights bring the Skoda 'family look' to the Fabia

Skoda has revealed the facelifted Fabia hatch and the Roomster just ahead of their public unveiling at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in a few days time.

The new models get cosmetic upgrades to bring them into what is Skoda’s family look and a slew of new engine options  including the award winning 1.2 TSi engine from the Volkswagen Polo.

Both the models get the new family grille and3D shaped headlamps which emphasize the width of the car for a more dynamic and planted squat look. The revised engine portfolio consists of four petrol units and two diesel units with power ranging from 60 bhp to 105 bhp. The 1.2 litre 105 bhp TSi engine is availabe with the 7-Speed dual clutch automatic transmission with a combined fuel consumption of just 53.3 mpg. The 1.2 litre TSi engine will also be available in 85 bhp and 105 bhp flavor with a manual 5 speed transmission. The two diesels offered are identical in size and offer 90 bhp and 105 bhp respectively.

We expect the facelifted Fabia to be launched in the Indian market soon with a revised price tag to reflect product positioning vis a vis the all new Volkswagen Polo.

ŠKODA SHOWS NEW FACES OF FABIA AND ROOMSTER

Škoda Auto is unveiling the new-look Fabia and Roomster at this year’s Geneva Motorshow. Škoda’s compact cars have been given an exciting exterior redesign, plus a fresh range of engines, packed with new technology.

The new design accentuates the cars’ width, with a totally redesigned face that gives both cars a more dynamic look, increasing their road presence. Scout models have also been redesigned, with a new Fabia hatch version making its debut in Geneva.

The new look is most evident in the redesigned radiator grille and 3D-shaped headlamps, which have been considerably widened, highlighting the stronger horizontal line of the cars’ faces. This gives both Fabia and Roomster a more dynamic look, while losing none of the cars’ elegance and appeal. Both vehicles now look more confident, mature and expressive.

The Fabia, Fabia Estate and Roomster also receive a number of technological improvements including state-of-the-art engines. This new engine portfolio is at the very core of the changes, with the entire front structure being redesigned to accommodate them.

Škoda will offer four petrol engines and two diesel units in the UK, with power ranging from 60bhp to 105bhp in the Fabia and from 70bhp to 105bhp in the Roomster. All engines comply with the EU5 standard and deliver exceptionally low fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels.

But Škoda’s development efforts weren’t only aimed at improving efficiency – improved performance was also a key goal. Nowhere is this more apparent than when the new 1.2 TSI 105bhp petrol engine is combined with the optimised, two-clutch seven-speed DSG transmission. This delivers impressive power with excellent combined fuel consumption of just 53.3 mpg. The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI engine is available in two power levels – 85 bhp and 105bhp. Both of these will also be available with a five-speed manual transmission.

Both diesel units are fitted with high-pressure Common Rail injection, with a pressure of up to 1,600 bar combined with fast-responding piezoelectric injectors that are able to perform as many as five injections within one beat, resulting in improved engine refinement. Both diesel engines feature particulate filters as standard and CO2 emissions are under 110g/km.

The Fabia engine line-up consists of:
* 1.2 6V 60 bhp
* 1.2 12V 70 bhp
* 1.2 TSI 85 bhp
* 1.2 TSI 105bhp (manual and DSG)
* 1.6 TDI CR DPF 90 bhp
* 1.6 TDI CR DPF 105 bhp

The Roomster is available with the following engines:
* 1.2 12V 70 bhp
* 1.2 TSI 85 bhp
* 1.2 TSI 105bhp (manual and DSG)
* 1.6 TDI CR DPF 90 bhp
* 1.6 TDI CR DPF 105 bhp

The Škoda stand will be located in Hall 2, stand 2160. The press conference will take place on March 2nd 2010 at 12.45 at the Škoda Auto stand.

Another example of the miniscule technology at work which defies the adage “Bigger is better”. Fiat powertrain technologies will unveil their next generation small displacement engine at the 2010 Geneva Motor show.

The cut out of the 85 bhp engine christened Twin-Air will be on display at the Fiat stand and also under the hood of Fiat’s highly successful 500. The 900 cc twin cylinder engine will be available in a range of power outputs starting from the 65 bhp naturally aspirated to the full blown turbocharged 105 bhp variant. Fiat says the new engine emits a whopping 32% less CO2 than engine with similar power output while at the same time being significantly shorter (-23% ) and lighter (-10%).

When compared to Fiat’s own 1.2 Litre 8 valve engine the new engine not only makes more power at 85 bhp but also consumes 15% less fuel and has 25% better performance. The same engine if compared to the 1.4  litre 16 v engine cuts the consumption by a whopping 30% while delivering almost the same performance and pleasure.

Fiat is considering using the engine in a hybrid application owing to its size and weight and also as a natural gas combusting configuration.

The first car to be available with the new engine will be 500 starting from July 2010.

TWIN-AIR – 85 HP, world preview

The new two-cylinder engine family made by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies called TWIN-AIR will be making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. This is a brand-new concept on the worldwide auto scene and confirms the leadership of the Fiat Group in this field.

Using next-generation technology, the new engine implements the revolutionary Multiair system combined with special fluid dynamics optimised for the best fuel efficiency. Furthermore, by taking the concept of downsizing to the extreme and masterly tuning the basic mechanics, the new family – delivering from 65 to 105 HP – emits 30% less CO2 than an engine of equal performance.

Visitors to the show will admire the first application of this new engines on a 500, the first Fiat model on which it will be introduced next July. The car is equipped with a two-cylinder turbo 85 HP engine which has the lowest CO2 emission levels for a petrol engine (up to 95 g/km) without compromising performance and driving pleasure. Compared with the two engine versions available today, it provides excellent performance with a major fuel reduction: the new turbo two-cylinder 85 HP engine consumes down to 15% less fuel and has 25% more performance than the 1.2 8v, while fuel consumption drops to a remarkable 30% with respect to the 1.4 16v with comparable performance and the same high driving pleasure.

Furthermore, with respect to a four-cylinder of equal performance and medium displacement, the new engine is significantly shorter (-23%) and lighter (-10%), opening the way to interesting further developments, such as methane fuel feed or hybrid technology combinations, again under the sign of greater eco-friendliness. In particular, a methane version of the TWIN-AIR will be available soon providing a further CO2 emission reduction: this is possible by adopting a pair of special injectors in addition to the petrol injectors on the intake manifold rails. Improving these fuel saving results using internal combustion engines will be difficult and alternative technologies will need to be developed. The combination of traditional engines and electric motors appears particularly promising. Precisely because of its small size, the TWIN-AIR is well suited to be coupled with an electric motor, and in general with a device arranged between engine and gearbox for recovering and storing the energy which is normally wasted during braking.

Nothing short of an engineering gem, the two-cylinder implements the revolutionary Multiair technology developed and patented by FPT – Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which was introduced on FIRE engines last year for the first time. The heart of Multiair is a new electro-hydraulic valve management system that reduces fuel consumption by controlling air directly via the inlet valves (without using the throttle). Multiair reduces polluting emissions (thanks to improved combustion control) and also considerably improves performance by boosting driveability with respect to a traditional petrol engine of equal displacement.

Furthermore, the new TWIN-AIR engine takes the concept of downsizing to the extreme: combining a small displacement engine with a next-generation turbocharger provides performance comparable to – or even better than – that of a larger engine but with less fuel consumption and lower emissions. And more: the turbo significantly increases the maximum torque, making it available at a very low rpm, with the result of offering greater flexibility and an unrivalled promptness of response compared to conventional aspirated engines. All this comes with a simple build that benefits strength and reliability.

Last but not least, the new engine was painstakingly optimised and tuned. For instance, the basic two-cylinder architecture – combined with the low friction of internal parts – ranks this engine best in the “friction” class in the world. Furthermore, computer simulations have been used to identify the best possible standard displacement in terms of thermo-dynamic efficiency, and the best fluid dynamic configuration to optimise and get the best out of the MultiAir system. Finally, special attention has been placed on the NVH (Noise, vibration, and harshness) aspect to ensure vibration performance at least equivalent to that of a four-cylinder, with equal performance but with a characteristic sound. For this purpose, a balancing countershaft was used to maintain optimal vibration levels in all operating conditions of the engine, from the idling speed to top power.
