NEW DELHI, February 22, 2010 – Based upon a proven global architecture that has been redefined for the Indian market, the new Figo has undergone extensive engineering to the suspension and steering system along with improved sound refinement to bring new levels of driving enjoyment to the B- car segment of the market.

Chassis

Chassis for the new Figo is based over a 2489 millimetres wheelbase – the longest of any car in the B segment. This longer wheelbase provides a superior ride over different road conditions along with a large and refined cabin environment that can be enjoyed by the driver and all occupants.

Front track for the Figo is 1474 millimetres and 1444 millimetres at the rear. Overall length of the Figo is 3795 millimetres. Width at the widest part of the Figo is 1680 millimetres, small enough for the tight confines of India roads and traffic.

Overall height of Figo is 1427 millimetres. Ground clearance is 168mm, a critical measurement in India. For better clearance on steep inclines, the approach angle is 21.6 degrees and the departure angle is a generous 32.5 degrees.

Front and rear overhangs measure 681millimetres and 625 millimetres respectively, and despite having the longest wheelbase in class, the Figo measures in under 3.8 meters. Durability testing of the Figo by Ford engineers has demonstrated that the vehicle can continue operating at water heights up to 550millimetres and pull away under normal driving conditions.

Providing a longer wheelbase in the B-class of vehicles is only one part of a smoother ride. The ride characteristics for Figo were developed behind a strong, proven architecture which ensures a high level of handling, ride comfort and quiet interior levels.

High strength steel had been utilized in key areas of the structure to provide optimal strength properties in the body and help minimise reduce bending in key areas to allow the suspension and steering systems to operate with full effectiveness.

Up front, the MacPherson struts, lower A-arms and steering system are mounted on a rigid sub frame that bolts on the main body structure. The sub-frame includes a boxed structural section and is fabricated from steel stampings. This makes it easier and less expensive to replace in a collision yet provides excellent road noise isolation for a quiet cabin. This system is well proven in other Ford platforms.

The struts also include dual-path top mounts that effectively separate forces from the damper rods and provide better isolation from road harshness, improved ride control and enhanced steering precision over a variety of surfaces including spalled pavement, ruts and potholes. Front springs are specially designed and tuned with side load compensation. This full lateral compensation reduces operating friction and facilitates optimal damper operation for a smoother ride.

Low friction ball joints also are included in the front suspension and help reduce steering system friction and enhance steering precision and agility.

Front suspension travel is 170 millimetres and is designed to easily absorb inputs on all road surfaces with minimal feedback through the steering system to the driver.

The rear suspension, a twist beam system, is designed to meet the rigors of Indian roads. The low-profile rear suspension is built around a twist beam structure and is designed to provide excellent vertical travel and longitudinal compliance to absorb bumps and varying road surface conditions.

Bolstering the twist beam axle are twin tube dampers that have revised valving to react instantaneously to variations of the road surfaces to provide a smooth ride. Dampers are small and compact which helps minimise the intrusion into the passenger compartment while still providing excellent road compliance.

Chassis tuning and suspension settings were designed for optimal performance including ride and handling. Tuning and development was tested and refined on Ford’s proving grounds in Australia and various Indian road surfaces to ensure performance was balanced with driver and comfort for local market conditions and requirements. The complete system also was tested at various speeds to ensure structural integrity and durability.

Brakes

Stopping power for the Figo consists of a Front Disc/Rear Drum arrangement with standard power assist. A nine inch vacuum booster with a dual master cylinder is standard.

For long life and resistance to fading, Super DOT 4 brake fluid is used. The superior fluid offers increased heat resistance up to 180 degrees C – important in city traffic or downhill driving conditions where brakes are under constant use.

Two brake systems were developed for ABS and non-ABS versions. Both the brake systems were developed to meet high Ford standards for performance, feel, reliability and quietness of operation. The brake system was developed and tested in six countries across four continents to meet Ford’s rigorous global requirements.

Front brake rotors on models with ABS are vented and measure 260 millimetres and are 22 millimetres thick. Non-ABS models are fitted with rotors that are 238 millimetres x 20 millimetres. Single piston, cast iron callipers fitted with long life, asbestos free pads are used. Total swept area for front disc brakes is 170 square centimetres for ABS models and 156 square centimetres for non-ABS.

Rear brake drums on the ABS model are 203 millimetres x 36 millimetres for a total swept bake area of 231 sq. cm. Rear drums for non ABS models are 180 millimetres x 30 millimetres. Total swept area for the rear drums is 185 square centimetres for non-ABS Figos.

Anti-lock brakes are available on high-series models. The four-channel system includes Electronic Brake Force Distribution that comes into effect before the ABS system is activated to help control rear wheel slip. The four-channel system works independently at each wheel by monitoring wheel speed and slip and modulating brake pressure accordingly to each corner to maintain straight line braking under all types of braking conditions.

Steering

Starting with a system that was optimized for precise, driving dynamics, the hydraulic rack and pinion steering system for the new Figo provides easier steering efforts for dense traffic manoeuvring following refinements to the steering ratio.

The power-assist system includes a high-pressure/low flow engine driven pump that provides strong linear response with the added benefit of low parking efforts.

Just 2.81 turns are required lock-to-lock and the full turning circle diameter is 10 meters. Tuned specifically for the Indian market, the steering ratio is more compliant with the application of a new steering gear which requires a lower effort especially for tight parking manoeuvres in cities but also maintains the precision and agility at higher highway high speeds.

Bolted to a stiff sub frame, the steering rack also contributes to the front stiffness of the Figo. The location of the rack is mounted low to reduce the angle of the track rod relative to the lower suspension control arm and contributes to improved stability under braking.

Wheels & Tyres

All three trim levels of Figo will be equipped with 14 inch x 5.5 inch steel wheels fitted with 175/65R14 all-season radial tires. An argent painted trim cap is standard. Mid and High series model are equipped with a full wheel cover. The larger wheels and high profile tire size contribute to road isolation with the ability to absorb greater impacts from poor roads with minimal feedback to the driver.

Fuel Tank

Fuel capacity for Figo is 45 litres and ensures an exceptional driving range for this fuel efficient car. To further help drivers reduce the possibility of running out of fuel, the Figo fuel tank is equipped with a sensor that triggers the low fuel warning lamp in the instrument cluster. The lamp keeps glowing to remind the driver the range of the vehicle is less than 80 kilometres.

NEW DELHI, February 22, 2010 – Say goodbye to the two-box design strategy for economy cars and hello to kinetic design with the new Ford Figo.

When the design team for the new Figo met with the marketing team from India, the direction was clear: ”we want more”. After deciding on packaging objectives that needed to be met, such as reducing the overall length of the car to suit the Indian market, the designers were given the go-ahead to apply a near-clean sheet approach to both the interior and exterior.

Exterior design

Starting with an excellent structure and chassis, both interior and exterior designers took the Ford kinetic brand philosophy and applied it to the new Indian model.

“Fortunately for us, we had a great car, terrific architecture and solid proportions from the global chassis and structure,” said Scott Strong, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa (APA) design director. “We started with a vehicle that already had a good stance and a nice contemporary silhouette.”

According to Strong, while initial concepts were well received, the design team was encouraged with feedback from clinics that Indian customers were ready for a fresh approach to new small car design.

With the backing of Ford management and the Indian marketing team, the design team went to work adding more personality to the Figo and strategically taking elements of the global Ford kinetic design philosophy and adding them to the new interior and exterior designs.

The new designs were presented at a second round of customer clinics and shown to a group of potential Figo buyers.

By the second clinic, designers knew they had hit the nail on the head with the Indian consumer.

Figo’s exterior styling follows the global kinetic design elements that help harmonise the car with other models in the Ford global line-up, including Focus and Mondeo.

Starting with the tri-plane front end, elements including the split line on the top of the bonnet line up perfectly with the top of the headlamps and combine to give the car a sporty and aggressive appearance and develop the car’s unique personality. The car’s large headlamps have a dynamic shape that helps define the element of speed and agility for the Figo.

Underneath, the lower grille opening emulates what now appears on many global Ford models. The lower grille, painted black, is flanked by removable inserts that can be supplanted with driving lamps that are available as an accessory through Ford dealers. The upper grille, also painted black, pulls from Ford kinetic design with the “cat whisker” shape.

All models have a large pronounced “FORD” emblem located in the centre of the grille. On High-series models, the grille is complimented with a chrome strip running along the top of it.

The distinct Figo front fenders also include the side turn indicator lamp ornamentation that is found on many Ford passenger cars today. Trimmed in chrome on the high models, the small chiselled section behind the trim provides the starting point for the “comet tail” side treatment that has been designed through both side doors and carries into the quarter panel.

On the bottom, doors also feature extensive light catching sculpting.

High-series models also include door handles painted to match the body colour, adding to the upscale presence of the vehicle.

To ensure a quiet interior, doors on the Figo include new rubber seal designs to decrease wind noise inside the passenger compartment. On models equipped with diesel engines, double seals are used at the door openings.

The daylight opening (DLO) or the side glass area features a black B pillar and is surrounded by black trim. The long, fast DLO adds to the sporty stance of the Figo.

From the rear, the Figo continues with kinetic design cues. The rear backlight, along with a subtle hint of a spoiler located in the tailgate adds to the dynamism and muscular appeal. The rear backlight is flush-mounted for reduced wind noise. On High-series models, a rear wiper and nozzle sprayer are included. The centre high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) is located in the rear roofline. To help ensure visibility in city traffic, the new tail lamps are located high in the rear quarter panel.

Pronounced arches over the rear wheels reinforce Figo’s well-planted footprint.

Interior Design

The personality that Figo expresses on the outside carries over into the interior of the vehicle with an all-new design that communicates a simple elegance with quality, character and honesty.

The overall strategy was to make the driver and occupants feel special regardless of the trim level that a customer chooses.

On the inside, Figo provides some of the best interior ergonomics and proportions including 1084 millimetres of front legroom, 1358 millimetres of front shoulder room and 1001 millimetres of front headroom.

Second row proportions are best in the segment with rear seat leg, shoulder and headroom at 860 millimetres, 1300 millimetres and 959 millimetres respectively.

On Entry-level models, the overall theme is subtlety combined with harmony.

The instrument panel is free flowing and smooth with a textured surface. The instrumentation on the Entry series includes a speedometer and fuel gauge. Warning lights for engine coolant, oil pressure and voltage are included in the cluster to alert the driver.

Also included are alerts for ‘door ajar’, ‘headlamps on’ and seatbelts. Diesel models include an alert for ‘water in fuel’. All models include a 12-volt power socket to charge personal items, including cell phones.

On both the Entry- and Mid-series models, the five-speed transmission shifter is located in a short console on the floor that includes a cup holder. The parking brake is centrally located just aft of the console and is trimmed with a black boot. The parking brake includes a soft-feel grip. The High and High Plus series get a full deluxe floor console befitting a class above.

The seat design for Figo is all-new and includes fabric seat inserts with specific bolster and trim patterns that are unique for each series. Black cloth with a distinctive blue pattern highlight is the sole colour for the interior of the Entry-series Figo. Mid and High series have a black-themed interior highlighted with red accents. All interiors are distinctive with each interior having different variations in trim.

Door panels for the entry-level model are made of a grained composite insert fitted to all four doors. For ease of operation, deep door cups are provided and include storage for a one-litre bottle.

All models have a standard heater and air conditioning system. The system includes an internal dual filter to help reduce coarse and fine particles of pollen and dust from entering the vehicle when the air conditioning is in use. The air conditioning system, which includes the largest compressor in the class, is designed to provide best-in-class performance for a range of temperatures from -10 to 49 degrees Celsius.

Sun visors are included for both driver and passenger on all models. Mid- and High-series models include a vanity mirror for the front seat passenger.

On the passenger side of the instrument panel, designers have incorporated a small pocket for personal items. On models with airbags, this pocket is removed.

A standard hood release is located below the lower-left corner of the instrument panel. The electric release for the boot is easily accessible by the driver and is located on the lower-right hand corner of the instrument panel. The standard right-hand driver mirror and passenger-side outside mirror can be easily adjusted manually from the inside with a small adjustment located in the patch panel of the door. High-series models include power-activated outside rearview mirrors for both driver and passenger.

On Entry models, all door locks and windows are manually operated.

The vibrancy of the interior stands out in the High and High Plus series with the option of a bold and modern Coral Red instrument panel top. The colour theme is inspired by the vivacious and colourful tastes of Indian consumers and parallels can be drawn with the kind of colours people are using in their bedrooms and drawing rooms. Complimenting the Coral theme is the red illumination on the cluster, audio and other controls providing you with an inviting lounge. This is a first in the Indian market interior design that speaks of Ford’s understanding of fast-emerging consumer tastes.

On High-series models, the cluster houses both the odometer and tachometer, along with a fuel gauge, all easily visible from any driver position. Gauges are backlit with red lighting adding a touch of sportiness to the instrumentation. Both gauges are trimmed with chrome rings. A ‘low fuel’ message reminder illuminates when the fuel range drops below 80 kilometres. A chime alerts the driver progressively for additional pre-set ranges. Additional warning lamps are provided to remind drivers of low voltage and oil pressure.

Other features include Lane Change Indication that when momentarily depressed, flashes indicators three times eliminating the need to hold the stalk. Hazard deceleration alerts trailing drivers when vehicle speed rapidly decreases. The hazard lamps automatically flash when vehicle speed suddenly decreases at speeds below 96 kilometres per hour.

Buyers of the High-series models can also opt a for a supplemental inflatable restraint system that is designed to provide maximum protection in a frontal collision when used with the three-point seat belt. Frontal airbags are included for both the passenger and driver with the optional safety package. Airbags are load levelling and designed to deploy depending on the severity of vehicle impact – light impact in a parking lot or heavy impact at high speed.

On High-series models fitted with airbags, a longer console is used.

Both the Mid series and High series have remote keyless entry for extra security. All four doors have central locking. The feature allows drivers to automatically open all four doors or simply the driver’s door.

With the High-series console, specific aluminium trim outlines the perimeter of the shift boot.

The High series also includes a satin aluminium-painted shifter knob which is part of the console with the gear shifter boot in black rubber.

Seats for Mid and High series have exclusive trim patterns with additional bolstering and stitching. Cushions for the seats are fitted with a distinctive black cloth trimmed in red stripes. Keeping in mind the needs of Indian drivers, seat travel is a full 210 millimetres. High-series models also include a manual seat-height adjustment for the driver.

High-series models also are equipped with power windows for the front doors. Quarter windows are fixed on all models for extra security.

Rear doors are fitted with child door locks that prevent children from inadvertently opening doors while the car is in motion. When activated, doors can only be opened from the outside.

On High-series models with automatic door locks, all doors automatically lock after the vehicle reaches a speed of seven kilometres per hour.

Both the Mid- and High-series models have front and rear doors fitted with cloth inserts that match the seat fabric design. High-series models also include pull cups with a painted satin aluminium finish.

The rear seat for the Figo has been newly designed to include a full folding rear seat back that greatly increases cargo carrying capacity. When folded down, cargo carrying capacity is nearly doubled to easily accommodate large suitcases. Truck capacity is a generous 284 litres – the largest in its class.

Three-point safety belts are provided for the outboard rear passengers while a lap belt is included for the middle passenger.

To help passenger egress from the car, folding passenger grab handles are provided above each passenger door. Front and rear doors swing out 72 degrees respectively, for easy entry into the passenger cabin.

All models include full carpeting throughout the interior. Increased sound insulation has been added under the hood and at the firewall to ensure a quiet cabin environment.

Audio

Housed in the centre of the instrument panel of the Mid- and High-series model is a standard AM/FM radio with CD/MP3 capability. The 100 watt radio includes two AM and three FM bands. Scan and preset scan can be used to scan all six preset frequencies in a particular band. An auto-store function can be used to scan and store up to six frequencies in default locations.

Radio Data System (RDS) is standard on all Figo audio systems. RDS is a communications protocol standard that embeds small amounts of digital information in conventional FM broadcasts, including time, station identification and programme information. RDS also includes an additional text feature that displays the track name.

A sensitivity setting on the radio allows stronger or weaker signals to be delivered at optimal range. Speed-sensing volume also is standard. This helps maintain the volume level of the radio based on external noises.

Connectivity for the iPod is included with an “Aux-in” port located on the front fascia of the radio. An accessory function for USB also can be added. A scan function that helps drivers navigate through hundreds of songs is available and plays a new track every ten seconds.

An equaliser function ideally sets the sound for different music genres, including jazz, pop, classic and rock. Users can also adjust the bass, treble, balance and fader function as desired.

High-series models include Bluetooth connectivity. A simple tap on the redial button of the audio screen calls the last number used. Customers can access their phonebook, missed calls, received calls, dialled numbers and redial though the car’s speakers.

Drivers also can accept or decline any call on the audio unit. Other functions included are second call alert, swapping of calls between current and new calls, call mute and privacy mode. The audio unit also can be security coded with a password that needs to be authenticated when the unit is removed from the battery.

Four speakers are included in the Mid- and High-series models and are located in the door trim.

Inside and out, the design of Figo lives up to its name – cool!

FUEL EFFICIENCY, PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY HALLMARKS OF new ford FIGO POWERTRAINS

• New 1.2L petrol Duratec engine with five-speed manual designed specifically for the Indian market.

NEW DELHI, February 22, 2010 – When the new Ford Figo arrives in India dealer showrooms, motorists will be able to choose from two fuel-efficient powertrains, including a new fuel efficient 1.2L petrol engine developed exclusively for the Indian market.

1.2L DURATEC

Developed from the proven Ford four-cylinder SIGMA engine family, the new 1.2L engine features an optimised bore, a unique cylinder head design and a revised compression ratio of 9.75 compatible with Indian fuel quality. The new engine delivers 52.44 kW/71.35ps @ 6250 rpm and max net torque of 102Nm (10.4Kgm) @ 4000 rpm. The new engine meets Bharat Stage IV emission standards.

To help keep total vehicle mass in check, the engine block and cylinder head are constructed of aluminium. The block is manufactured through a high pressure die cast process and includes ribbing to provide a rigid structure. Combustion chambers are unique to the 1.2L and feature a 70.6 millimeter bore. Stroke is 76.5millimetres.

The four-valve cylinder head also is constructed of aluminium and is unique to the 1.2L engine. Water jackets have been redesigned for the revised head. Additionally, specific intake and exhaust camshafts were developed for the engine. The dual overhead camshaft design is equipped with hydraulic self adjustable tappets that help provide minimal friction and reduced powertrain noise while delivering optimised power.

A specifically – tuned exhaust manifold that directs spent gases into a quick light off catalytic converter is utilised. The converter has been placed as close as possible to the exhaust manifold to heat up quicker and allow the engine to reach optimum operating temperature faster. An added benefit of this arrangement is the engine catalyst heats up faster to reduce cold start emissions.

Air induction is handled through a thermoplastic intake manifold with identical length runners that provide optimal fuel distribution. Sequential fuel induction is used and coupled with drive-by-wire electronic throttle technology provides improved low end efficiency and smooth acceleration characteristics.

The 1.2L engine also includes Ford’s innovative stretchy accessory drive belt that helps reduce complexity under the hood, eliminates the need for a tension adjustment devices and improves powertrain noise, vibration and harshness.

More than 300,000 kilometres of testing were performed before bringing the 1.2L engine to market. The engine was thoroughly evaluated in temperature extremes from –10 to 49 (ambient) degree Celcius. Extensive engine dynamometer testing at wide open throttle (WOT) as well on-road testing in urban and freeway cycles have proven the 1.2L to be exceptionally durable with minimum maintenance.

Fuel economy for the 1.2L engine is 15.6 Kilometres per litre.

1.4L Duratorq TDCi

Advanced Common-Rail Diesel Engine Technology

In addition to the new 1.2L gasoline engine, the new Figo will offer a larger displacement 1.4L diesel engine. While both feature all aluminium construction, the similarity ends there. With more and more drivers looking for superior fuel economy without sacrificing power, the 1.4L Duratorq TDCi is an ideal choice. Horsepower is rated at 69 PS (50.72 kW) at 4000 rpm and torque is equally as impressive with 160 Nm (16.3Kgm) at 2000 rpm. The engine is Bharat Stage IV compliant

The 1.4 L Duratorq TDCi engine is proving popular. The engine helped the Ford Fiesta diesel in gain top marks for Total Customer Satisfaction in the latest TNS survey and propelled the Ford Ikon to rank among best-in-class for fuel efficiency.

In order to account for the higher compression ratios required for the diesel, block construction is unique and extra gusseting for increased strength has been incorporated into the diesel block. Cast iron bore liners are fitted into the block during the casting process. Bore is 73 millimetres and stroke is 82 millimetres. Cast aluminium pistons with a compression ratio of 18:1 are used in the diesel.

Fuel delivery for the Duratorq engine is through a common rail system. Common rail systems improve fuel economy, improve torque output, reduce emissions and also contribute to reduced NVH issues commonly associated with diesel engines.

The cylinder head for the diesel is a single overhead camshaft design with two valves per cylinder. Valves are actuated by a nylon timing gear with rubber belt that provides outstanding durability for the life of the vehicle. With special attention to mass, the Duratorq engine tips the scales at just 98 kilograms. Contributing to the low friction characteristics of the engine, roller cam followers are used. For reduced maintenance costs, the assembly is driven by a longer life, glass reinforced high-nitrile butyl rubber belt. In addition to the camshaft, the toothed belt also drives the water pump and fuel pumps.

The accessory belt is a self adjusting type with the aide of a spring loaded tensioner.

Duratorq engines use the latest generation Common Rail Fuel Injection technology, which ensures better lower emissions and better fuel economy, improved torque output, enhanced engine performance and driveability. This fuel injection system is capable of delivering fuel up to a maximum of 1500 bar, which improves atomisation and thereby better combustion. Moreover, Piezo injectors ensure precise metering of fuel, thereby bettering fuel economy.

The 1.4L TDCi also is Bharat IV compliant with carbon dioxide levels are just 114 grams per kilometre. Fuel economy is 20 kilometres per litre.

IB5 five-speed manual transmission

The transmission for the new Figo is the proven five-speed manual IB5 transmission designed to provide excellent response and deliver outstanding fuel economy. This transmission has proven capability in the Indian market.

Figo will continue to instill Ford’s fun-to-drive theme by delivering high performance and great driveability.

With more than 70 percent of driving often done in heavy city traffic and stop-and-go situations, Indian driver prefer a clutch with lower effort. Special engineering efforts were placed on optimising the gear shift quality in Figo. Engineers optimized the clutch pedal characteristics and tuned it ergonomically so it is better suited to the Indian driver for feel and functionality. Shifting is precise and isolated from engine and transmission vibration, while the shift lever uses best-in-class cable shift technology.

The double side dry clutch system also includes hydraulically-operated clutch mechanism that automatically compensates for clutch wear. This eliminates periodic adjustments to the clutch pedal.

Overall final drive ratios of the transmission are 4.25 for petrol and 3.82 for diesel and help provide excellent driveability and gradeability characteristics without sacrificing fuel efficiency.

Zero to 100 kilometres per hour performance is 15.5 seconds for the petrol variant and 15.8 seconds for diesel models.

Both engines will be locally produced at Ford’s Chennai facility. Recently expanded as part of Ford’s US $500-million investment in India, the engine facility encompasses more than 40,000 square metres and is designed to produce both diesel and petrol engines on a new flexible line.

Other variants of the petrol engine are slated to be produced at the plant for eventual use in global markets. The plant is expected to produce more than 250,000 units annually.

Factors such as fuel efficiency, cost of maintenance, registration and insurance are all key in determining what is affordable for a new car buyer.

“Fuel efficiency is one of the most important factors in determining the cost of ownership for the Indian consumer,” explains Nigel Wark, executive director of marketing, sales and service, Ford India. “Other items topping the list of issues include service availability, frequency and cost of service, and the replacement cost of critical parts.”

When Figo is introduced, it will be among the leaders in fuel efficiency due to the introduction of a new fuel efficient petrol engine, the Duratec 1.2L 16V, as well as the class-leading 1.4L Duratorq TDCi diesel engine. Both engines will be fitted with a five-speed manual IB5 Ford transmission that is optimally geared for the heavy city driving cycle in India.

Regular service is important to the longevity of the vehicle and Ford engineers have designed key components and maintenance schedules to help keep the cost of ownership as low as possible.

In many areas of India, due to the high amount of time spent in urban traffic or in dusty road conditions, the vehicle undergoes severe driving conditions. These severe conditions often require more frequent fluid and filter changes to keep the car at an optimum operating level.

Among items such as fuel filter and fluid replacement, including transmission oil, clutch fluid, drive belt and engine coolant, the new Figo is expected to be class leading due to the infrequent service that is required on those items. Engine oil and brake fluid, as well as oil and air filters, are designed and tested for extreme durability and reduced frequency of replacement. Fuel filters are designed for 60,000 kilometres for petrol engines and 30,000 kilometres for diesel engines. On both engines, the timing belt doesn’t require replacement until 120,000 kilometres. Engine coolant is expected to withstand the rigors of high temperatures in city traffic for up to 100,000 kilometres.

Under normal driving conditions, the transmission oil is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

With longer intervals of key maintenance components due to better durability, competitive cost of the parts and the short time required for vehicle servicing, Figo is placed among the leaders in scheduled service over a 5 year/100,000 kilometre period.

COMPETITIVE PARTS PRICING

Making service affordable through competitive pricing of parts and increased availability of so called “child parts” also continues to be the focus of Ford dealerships.

With more service parts and components being produced locally in India by Ford as well as key suppliers, the need to import parts has decreased greatly while the availability of parts has increased. Additionally, locally produced parts offer substantial savings to the customer due to savings incurred with local production and the absence of import taxes and the lower cost of local production.

Advantages also are realised with the repairing of components with “child parts” rather than replacing entire components. One example is the replacement of door assembly.

“With heavy road congestion, door damage repair is both frequent and quite expensive for the Indian customer,” explains Wark. “In many instances, simply replacing the door skin with locally-produced sheet metal rather than the entire door assembly can save customers a substantial amount of money due to our reduced labour costs.”

Engineers also pay special attention to any fluctuation in the life expectancy of parts. According to Wark, the top three components that used to require replacement were the horn, brakes and clutch – all due to high city driving cycles.

The answer was to make these components more durable for Indian drivers. A heavy duty horn was developed and the clutch has been engineered with a unique durability cycle that addresses frequent clutch use and pedal application. The horn and air cleaner have to undergo special water testing to ensure the parts can survive in monsoon road conditions. Heavy-duty, long-lasting brake pads are standard equipment on all Ford passenger vehicles.

Collision repair parts also have been priced more competitively to reduce overall costs to the customer. With customers having to bear the insurance deductible cost of up to 50 percent on many plastic parts, replacement panels have been priced very competitively to help reduce the replacement cost of a major assembly like the bumper.

“Many parts carry a graduated deductible for five years,” explains Wark. “And realistically, an item like the bumper is probably one of the first things we will replace in a collision repair. So we’ve tried to be sensitive to repair costs for the consumer.”

WARRANTY PROTECTION

Another factor affecting ownership costs over the life of the vehicle is warranty protection.

Major components must meet the rigorous test cycles defined by Ford engineers all over the world. For Indian vehicles, this means temperature extremes up to 80 degrees centigrade and down to – 40 degrees centigrade.

“The same heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit that keeps you cool in traffic also has to keep you warm in colder parts of the country,” says Wark.

In addition to meeting temperature extremes, components must pass a minimum of 100,000 kilometres during durability runs. Vehicles are subjected to regular testing procedures that include dusty air conditions, poor roads and even salt air that can rust bodies.

Areas of the interior including the upper door panel, instrument panel and fabrics used in the seating material must be able to withstand high sun loads to ensure fabric remains durable while maintaining high levels of gloss and resistance to colour fading.

The new 1.2L engine for Figo already has achieved more than 300,000 kilometres of testing in both real world road conditions and engine dynamometer testing. As part of the extensive durability requirements, the 1.2L was subjected to more than 90 continuous hours at wide-open-throttle on the dynamometer.

The Figo will carry a two year/100,000 kilometre warranty that is one of best in the segment. The vehicle also comes with two-year Road Side Assistance, a programme that Ford pioneered in India.

Roadside Assistance provides free 24-hour service for a period of two years from the sale date of the vehicle. The service is available through a national toll-free number and provides on-site assistance for minor repairs including fuel delivery, jumpstart, vehicle unlocking and towing on flatbed trucks.

Various extended packages available for total maintenance and scheduled service also are available for Figo. Packages include Ford’s Scheduled Service Plan (SSP) that allows customers to purchase extended service plans for regular maintenance items for up to 100,000 kilometres or five years at a reduced rate. Fully transferable, the plan protects against inflation on items including engine oil, fuel and oil filters and labour costs.

The plan does not cover wear and tear parts, accident repairs, tyres or mechanical and electrical failures.

QUICK SERVICE EXPANDED

Providing easy and quick service for the new Figo also has been addressed with more dealerships adding Quick Service bays. The new Quick Service bays are staffed by a pair of technicians and stocked with fast moving parts required for normal service and maintenance within arm’s reach. Rather than having to walk across the dealership or order a part that may not be in stock, technicians can easily retrieve the part in a cabinet that is part of the Quick Service bay.

With near choreographed precision, the technicians can move through the normal service and maintenance that is required for the vehicle very quickly.

Under this service operation technicians are dedicated to providing quick service to the customer and getting the vehicle back on the road in the shortest amount of time. This arrangement also allows the customer to reduce the amount of time they have to spend less time at the dealership waiting for normal service to be performed. Service can generally be performed in less than ninety minutes.

Service items that need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear, including shock absorbers or suspension and mechanical components, are moved to other areas of the dealership. The objective is to service vehicles requiring replacement of normal wear and tear items within a day.

Launched in the first quarter of 2009, Quick Service is available at 45 outlets in major dealerships across India including those in Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, New Delhi and Chennai.

NEW DELHI, India, February 22, 2010 – When the new Figo hits the streets in just a few short weeks, it will signal Ford’s commitment to Indian consumers with a vehicle that is a result of intensive research and aimed squarely at more than 70 percent of the country’s new vehicle market.

Part of Ford’s US$500-million investment in India, Figo comes to market as a car that has been designed and engineered following months of exhaustive customer clinic research along with thorough engineering in both simulated and actual road tests to ensure the product’s reliability, durability and after-sales service are up to the standards expected by new car buyers in India. Figo has been thoroughly engineered to meet customer expectations with a refined ride that delivers excellent fuel economy and withstands the rigors of India’s roads.

During the early development stage for Figo, Ford marketers began an in-depth study of the Indian customer.

“We really looked at Figo as an opportunity to become more engaged with the customer,” explains Nigel Wark, executive director, marketing, sales and service, Ford India. “Figo had to be much more than simply delivering a product.”

According to Wark, one of the first priorities was to redefine the segment. With much of the market’s growth in the sub-B segment, Ford deliberately set out to offer a car that was more substantial and generous than other segment offerings. The result is a larger, true B car in what is traditionally a smaller package, sub-B segment.

“The Indian automobile industry is evolving rapidly and we are finding that customers are becoming more discerning than ever before,” Wark says. “When potential customers look at Figo, we want them to walk away surprised by what they see. For years, we’ve been seen as offering only premium-priced products in India, and that has kept us as a small player operating in only 20 percent of the market. With Figo, customers will see a premium product offered to the mainstream market at an affordable price. Customers today want to buy products that offer value and make them feel great about making a smart choice.”

Figo is a game changer for Ford in India and changing customer perceptions about Ford will be one of the major objectives with Figo. Offering a true B-size car that boasts a substantial package in terms of size, features, powertrains and interior space as an alternative to the smaller sub-B cars is part of Ford’s mission with Figo.

The new Figo customer, identified as ‘Sandeep’ in Ford marketing circles, is 26-27 years old. He holds a professional degree and is ambitious with aspirations of moving up both socially and professionally. Newly married with no children, he lives with his parents or extended family, and strives to maintain a balance between his family and work life.

He is highly optimistic that he will be recognised for his contributions at work and is on his way up the corporate ladder. With his newfound success, an automobile is seen as an exclusive space where he can enjoy freedom from the pressures of work, enjoy music and take his wife out safely at night or pick up friends for an evening out in the city.

Part of the attraction with Figo is that it offers much more than being a simple mode of transportation to and from work.

“Overall the car is larger on the inside with increased luggage capacity,” Wark says. “You can pick people up from the airport or plan weekend trips with the family. Convenience features in Figo, such as Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, fit our customers’ lifestyles.”

Attracting customers to Figo was key in the design of the car. With four derivatives offered, each model has a distinct personality.

“We communicated Figo’s value and appeal to customers, giving them more starts with design,” explains Emily Lai, colour and materials design manager for Figo. “You want a car that connects with you, something you’re proud to own and a vehicle that reflects and makes a statement about you.”

According to Lai, lowering the cost of a vehicle doesn’t mean quality, luxury and character have to be excluded. “You start at a quality baseline and build from there,” she adds.

Part of the overall strategy for interiors was to make occupants feel special. Every model is designed to be personal and prestigious. At the Entry level it is about subtlety and harmony. Dark tones in the interior are synonymous with classical elegance. Moving through the lineup and into the High series, sport and sophistication merge into an exciting and unique synergy that’s defined with bright chrome exterior accents, a coloured instrument panel and satin aluminium trim through the interior.

Listening to Indian consumers prior to the initial design process, and throughout the customer research clinics, played an important part in the final design of the car, according to Scott Strong, design manager for Figo.

“Sandeep wants to be recognised for his success and an automobile helps him flaunt his achievements and enjoy life driving with family and friends. Our marketing team and potential customers told us continually to come back with more,” says Strong. “It’s Figo’s solid design, good stance and contemporary silhouette that is really refreshing. It graduates into the next class of vehicles and certainly looks like more car than you would expect for the money. Small does not have to be boring.”

Designers were careful to ensure that the final design communicated that Figo was a legitimate form of transportation and that despite its youthful spirit, it also was mature and smart. “Some manufacturers make the mistake of thinking small cars have to be cute, almost toy like,” Strong says. “Figo communicates solidness where people feel safe and actually feel like they are driving a car rather than a toy.”

Figo also is about redefining the Ford brand.

What customers see as value and what they take away from a test drive is important according to Wark. “We have to respect the customer’s intelligence and discerning ability. It’s not enough for us to simply go out and talk about the product’s attributes. With Figo, we’ve actually made it larger. People can view this product and instantaneously feel this car is a smart choice. That’s the outcome we’re looking for.”

Indian consumers have great pride and expect that products meet international standards for quality according to Wark. Knowing that Figo has been designed and engineered to global standards from expertise around the world adds credibility to the end product.

Beyond the vehicle, Ford also has been dedicated to meeting the expectations of customers with a promise of high quality at both the production level and in after-sales treatment for the customer.

The new Chennai plant has been thoroughly upgraded to global standards by taking the best from both competitive makes and Ford’s stringent global manufacturing standards. Created with a ‘best-of-the-best’ approach, the new plant has added 66 robots in the body shop and along the assembly line to ensure that fit and finish are of the highest standards. A new 3-Wet high-solids paint facility is a first in Ford passenger car plants not only in India but globally.
