Audi has officially unveiled the all new 2012 A6 sedan which is all set to take on the might of the new BMW 5-Series and Mercedes Benz’s E-Class.

The new A6 will make its market debut in early 2011  and will be available with a raft of engine options including a hybrid, which Audi says will have the performance of a V6 and fuel efficiency of a four cylinder.

Designed heavily on the lines of the new A8, the 2012 A6 sedan measures 4.92 meters (16.14 ft) long, 1.87 meters (6.14 ft) in width, it is only 1.46 meters (4.79 ft) tall and has a wheelbase of 2.91 meters (9.55 ft). The harmonious proportions – the long engine hood, the short overhangs, and the sweeping roofline – embody a character of athletic elegance.

Painted a high-gloss black, the large, low single-frame grill featuring beveled upper corners merges neatly with the sculptured front end. The horizontal orientation of the louvers underscores the width of the latest A6, as do the wide, low air intakes.

The interplay between soft surfaces and precise, hard lines dominates the side view of the new Audi A6. Typical for the brand, the sheet-metal body is roughly twice as tall as the greenhouse. The tornado line beneath the window edge runs across the entire flank; it forms a prominent shaded edge, lending strength to the body’s shoulders. Above the side sills lies the dynamic line, taking a slight upward turn. A high-gloss package accentuates the area around the windows.

The elegant line ends in a prominent tail end with a subtle spoiler edge. The matt black diffuser insert envelopes the two large, round tailpipes for the exhaust system. As is always the case on an Audi, the surfaces at the tail end are three-dimensional in shape. The styling of the two-part tail lights also echoes the trapezoidal shape of the headlights at the rear of the car.

Audi says that more than 20% of the body with add on parts such as the engine hood, the front fenders, the rear hatch and doors as well as bulkhead and cross member in the luggage compartment are all made of aluminium to keep the weight down. The front suspension is also aluminium and features five control arms while at the rear is a self tracking trapezoidal-link suspension. Adaptive air suspension with controlled damping and a dynamic steering system will also be available as an optional extra.

The new 2012 A6 will be available with five engine options at launch – two gasoline and three diesels. The gasoline range starts with 2.8 liter naturally aspirated V6 with 204 hp and 280 nm of torque which does the 0-100 kph sprint in a claimed 7.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 kmph along with average consumption of 7.4 liter per 100 kms the EU cycle.

The other gasoline option is the 3.0 liter TFSI supercharged V6 which develops 300 hp and 440 nm of torque. The TFSI model sprints from 0-100 kph in just 5.5 seconds on top a top speed of 250 kmph (electrically limited).

The diesel engine range has three options – starting with a 2.0 liter four cylinder TDI delivering 177 bhp and 380 nm of maximum torque. Next up is the 3.0 liter TDI V6 which develops 204 hp of maximum power and 400 nm of maximum torque or 245 hp of maximum power and 500 nm of maximum torque in its more powerful top of the line version.

The 2.0 liter TDI achieves 0-100 kph in 8.7 seconds and fuel efficiency of 4.9 liter per 100 kms in the EU cycle while the powerful 3.0 TDI V6 does the 0-100 kph run in 7.2 seconds or 6.1 seconds for the more powerful variant. The fuel efficiency figures stand at 5.2 liter per 100 kms for the 204 hp variant and 6.0 liter per 100 kms for the higher powered 245 hp variant.

Transmission options include a 6-speed manual transmission, a CVT, seven-speed S-tronic automatic depending on the engine on offer or the eight-speed automatic which will arrives in the hybrid. The transmissions will either drive the front wheels or quattro permanent all-wheel drive system depending upon the variant.

The A6 hybrid will be Audi’s only second model apart from the q5 Hybrid Quattro. The hybrid model will come with a 211 hp 2.0 TFSI engine paired with an electric motor developing 33 kW and 211 nm of torque. The A6 Hybrid will employ a parallel hybrid concept with electric motor sitting directly behind the TFSI, occupying the space of the torque converter upstream of the modified 8-speed tiptronic that drives the front wheels.

The hybrid system uses a lithium-ion battery pack which provides 1.3 kWh of nominal power and is stored under the luggage compartment. The hybrid can not only operate in the engine only or hybrid mode but can also run on pure electric mode to speeds upto 100 kph but  not for very long.

The A6 Hybrid accelerates from 0-100 kph in 7.3 seconds (claimed) with a top speed of 238 kmph and will return an impressive 6.2 liter per 100 kms equating to CO2 emissions level of just 142 grams per km.

The future range will also include Avant Station Wagon Model, a go faster S6 and bonkers RS6 model.

India’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki today handed over first lot of Two Maruti Suzuki SX4 Hybrid cars and One ‘Eeco Charge’ to Mr Arvinder Singh Lovely, Hon’ble Minister of Transport for NCT Delhi. The vehicles intended for use at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, were handed over by Mr. Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, in the city.

Maruti Suzuki has made ready a lot of 14 future technology vehicles for the use at Commonwealth Games. These include 10 Maruti Suzuki SX4 Hybrid Cars and 4 Maruti Suzuki ‘Eeco Charge’ vehicles. The balance vehicles will be handed over to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee for use by the Officials during the Commonwealth Games.

On the occasion Mr. Shinzo Nakanishi said, “I am happy that engineers at Maruti Suzuki have developed these future technology vehicles. This project has helped our engineers to increase their knowledge and enhance their R&D capability. We are grateful to the Government for their leadership to promote green technology in automobiles. Maruti Suzuki is happy to be associated with the Commonwealth Games national initiative, through these vehicles.”

Maruti Suzuki has developed the SX4 Hybrid vehicles and ‘Eeco Charge’ concept vehicles as a part of the demonstration fleet. The demonstration of the fleet of SX4 Hybrids and ‘Eeco Charge’ vehicles at the Commonwealth Games 2010, is in line with the ambitious NHPP and MNRE program outline.

SX4 Hybrid and ‘Eeco Charge’ concept development has been taken up by Maruti Suzuki as a part of the Government initiated and SIAM coordinated NHPP & MNRE National Hybrid Propulsion Program (NHPP) and the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy Sources (MNRE)’s High Energy Density Battey Development Program.

‘SX4 Hybrid’

SX4 Hybrid is a Full Parallel Hybrid with Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) on a sedan platform. SX4 Hybrid presents a case of evolution of transportation system with elements of flexibility, style and eco-friendliness. SX4 Hybrid offers mobility solution in an eco-friendly yet stylish manner.

The hybrid system used in the SX4 Hybrid features an electric motor and twin clutch arrangement with advance Lithium-ion battery technology. This concept combines a 1.2 litre K-series petrol engine and a 50 kW electric motor along with 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission. Together, these provide high fuel economy with lower emissions. The SX4 Hybrid is also capable of running solely on its electric motor, offering a further boost to fuel efficiency and zero emission modes in city driving. The SX4 hybrid offers 25 per cent more fuel efficiency compared to conventional gasoline vehicle.

‘EECO Charge’

‘Eeco Charge’ is a zero-emission, pure electric vehicle developed on a MPV platform. It is powered by a 50kW motor and a 24kWh Lithium-ion battery. On full charge it promises a driving range of around 100km and attains top speed of 100 km per hour. The ‘Eeco Charge’ also has the ‘Sport Mode’ for acceleration enthusiast. The battery for ‘Eeco Charge’ has been packaged under floor for better drivability and retaining ample boot space. Honda has confirmed the launch of the hybrid version of its Jazz supermini at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in September next month.

The Jazz Hybrid will borrow the hybrid drivetrain from Honda’s Insight featuring a 1.3 liter petrol engine combined with an electric motor and mated to a CVT gearbox. Honda says that Jazz Hybrid will be able to run on electric power alone under some medium and low speed conditions.

Externally, the hybrid variant will have revised headlight units with blue surround, restyled front and rear bumper and clear lens tail lights.  The interiors will get blue lightening for the instrument console,  single color dashboard and optional leather trim for the first time in Europe.

Although there are no official figures on fuel efficiency or emissions, the new Jazz Hybrid will match the Insight’s 61 mpg urban fuel consumption figure and 101 g/km of CO2 emissions.

The Jazz Hybrid will go on sale in UK from early next year.

While they are fuel efficient and environmentally friendly, Hybrids like Prius aren’t exactly pedestrian friendly, especially for the blind… why you may ask? Well for the single reason that at low speeds they act as full electrics running on battery power alone making it difficult for the pedestrian to hear them while approaching.

To circumvent the problem Toyota has announced the sale of an onboard device designed to alert pedestrians and others audibly to the presence of a quiet vehicle just like a gasoline electric hybrid. The device goes on sale from August 30 and will cost 12,600 yen (approx $150) and will initially be available for Prius Gasoline Electric hybrid.

The device consists of a speaker mounted upfront which emits a synthesized sound of an electric motor when Prius is operating as an electric vehicle at speeds upto 25 km/hr. The sound is aimed at alerting pedestrians but not annoy by raising and falling its pitch relative to the vehicle’s speed hence also helping in judging the approximate distance and movement.

Toyota is planning to use this device in other gasoline electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles planned for launch.

French automaker, Peugeot has announced world’s first diesel hybrid vehicle in the form of 3008 Crossover which has  a potential 74.4 mpg with just 99 g/km of CO2 and even a full electric mode.

The new 3008 is powered by a fuel efficient 2.0 liter HDi diesel engine delivering 163 bhp of maximum power which is combined with a 37 bhp electric motor mounted on the rear axle powering the rear wheels. The electric motor takes its power from the trunk mounted nickel metal hydride  batteries and delivers a constant 100 nm of torque which can go upto 200 nm when the need be. Combined power output stands at 200 bhp but more importantly an impressive 500 nm of maximum torque which will be handy in tough conditions. The system also comes with four different operating modes, namely – Auto, ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle), Four Wheel Drive and Sport. The hybrid powertrain is mated to an electrically controlled manual six speed sequential gearbox.

The 3008 Crossover Hydrid4 also comes with efficiency enhancing technologies like latest gen Stop & Start system, kinetic energy recovery system and Peugeot’s PTMU (Power Train Management Unit) which automatically manages the different operating modes of the engine to optimize fuel consumption.

The company is claiming a staggering 3.8 liter/100 km fuel consumption along with a small car busting 99 g.km of CO2 emissions.

The new 3008 HYbrid will be produced in France and will go on sale in Europe in the spring of 2011.

By launching the world’s first diesel full hybrid vehicle – the 3008 HYbrid 4 – Peugeot will be writing a new chapter in motoring history. The combination of a fuel efficient 2.0 litre 163 bhp HDi diesel engine and a 37 bhp electric motor is the optimal combination for a hybrid vehicle. Unlike previous hybrid vehicles which have chosen to use a less fuel efficient petrol engine, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4’s diesel engine provides superior Combined Drive Cycle fuel consumption of 74.4mpg, and CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 is designed to appeal to demanding, technophile customers who are in search of a rewarding and original vehicle.

In terms of performance, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 benefits from the combined power of the HDi diesel engine and electric motor during acceleration and when an immediate surge of power is required (the “boost” function). The maximum combined power output is 200 bhp, 163 bhp from the 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine and 37 bhp from the electric motor. A maximum torque of 500 Nm is available, split with 300Nm at the front from the HDi diesel engine and 200 Nm at the rear generated by the electric motor.

To manage all the available performance a control selector mounted on the centre console enables the driver to choose between four different operating modes.

“Auto” mode: the entire system is automatically controlled, including operation of the HDi diesel engine and the electric motor. This provides optimal driving for fuel consumption and dynamic performance
“ZEV” mode (Zero Emission Vehicle) provides access to an extensive all-electric mode. Activation of the HDi diesel engine is programmed to coincide with only more sustained phases of acceleration. This requires the high-voltage batteries to be sufficiently charged and turns the vehicle into a “city run-around” par excellence due to the total absence of noise and emissions.
Four-wheel drive mode (4WD) instructs both power trains to operate together as far as possible; the rear wheels are driven by the electric motor and the front wheels by the HDi diesel engine. It offers peace of mind, safety, improved driveability and accentuates the vehicle’s dynamic character. At low speed it allows “all-terrain” capabilities equivalent to those of an SUV. The driver will, therefore, no longer be concerned by the prospect of a slippery track or a snowbound uphill drive to a ski resort
Sport” mode favours quicker gear changes at higher engine speeds than normal mode. In this mode, the notion of “controlled power” comes into its own, coupling the diesel engine with the electric motor provides more dynamic performance, optimally distributed and transmitted to the road by the four wheel drive for a level of stability and driveability that will appeal to motoring enthusiasts.
With the Peugeot 3008 equipped with HYbrid4 technology, the aim is to appeal to customers who expect both environmental-friendliness and technological sophistication, and also genuine driving enjoyment.

Indeed, as well as the social benefit of the steep reduction in fuel consumption, the level of performance provided by this technology will delight even the most demanding customers in terms of road holding, responsiveness, driveability, peace of mind regardless of road conditions and the possibility of enjoying silent operation in town in the all-electric mode.

HYbrid4 technology brings together Peugeot’s best technologies and experience: HDi diesel engines, electric vehicle knowledge, second-generation Stop & Start and electronically-controlled sequential manual gearboxes.

The “hybrid” power train simply combines an HDi diesel engine and an electric motor. With their exceptional efficiency, HDi diesel engines are thermodynamically more efficient than a petrol engine and offer a 30% reduction in fuel consumption. Clearly the HDi diesel engine is the best internal combustion engine choice.

For the “electric” component, Peugeot has historical expertise in the field of electric vehicles. To date, the 106 Electric, marketed between 1995 and 2003, remains the world’s best selling zero emissions car (in total nearly 10,000 vehicles were produced). At the end of 2010, Peugeot will become the first to launch a latest-generation 100% electric vehicle in Europe, the Peugeot i0n.

Pursuing the common sense approach of capitalising on the best existing components and expertise, it was only natural to use Peugeot’s electronically-controlled 6-speed manual gearbox, not only for its engine management capabilities but also for its ability to optimise fuel consumption. To improve performance even further a second-generation STOP & START system is also used.

The choice of hybrid architecture was also guided by the search for optimal efficiency and consistency. Hybrid technology uses two power trains which can operate alternately or simultaneously:

The HDi diesel engine operates in its most optimal operating window on longer, out-of-town journeys. A diesel engine still remains the most efficient and versatile choice to power any vehicle
The electric motor takes over from the HDi diesel engine in phases of lower power demands, particularly when pulling away, driving at low speed and decelerating (for energy recovery). These are precisely the features that characterise urban driving
Changeover from the HDi diesel engine to the electric motor occurs automatically, due to a STOP & START system which places the HDi diesel engine in standby and restarts it as and when conditions require (the operation of the accelerator pedal, low battery charge level, etc…).

The two power sources also complement each other in certain driving conditions (“boost” effect during hard acceleration, or when overtaking another vehicle, for example). The performance of the HYbrid4 is therefore directly comparable to that obtained with a single HDi diesel engine of a much higher capacity, with good levels of responsiveness backed by a real breakthrough in terms of reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (around 35 % less in the combined cycle for equivalent performance).

The electric motor and its ancillary equipment (inverter, converter, etc) are fitted at the rear of the vehicle. This provides a number of advantages not only in terms of customer benefits and it also helps reduce costs and optimise the production process.

The original layout of the Hybrid4 system allows for the possibility of four-wheel drive. The HDi diesel engine drives the front wheels, while the electric motor (in the rear drive train) drives the rear wheels.

Everything is controlled electronically (“by wire”) and there are no mechanical links between the front and the rear drivetrains. This gives the system many advantages over a “traditional” mechanical system.

No structural constraints affecting the layout and design within the passenger compartment
4×4 and environmental-friendliness are no longer contradicting terms
The installation at the rear, of all the vehicle’s “electrical components”, has further technical and economic benefits.

Firstly, it avoids the need for any major redesign of the vehicle’s engine compartment, while also improving weight distribution. It also leaves intact the possibility of using a range of different capacity engines, for possible future introduction.

Secondly, this architecture is achieved by means of the use of a simple and compact rear module containing the electric motor, its ancillary equipment and also the rear drive train and suspension.

The costs of the rear module are, therefore, reduced because of the technical possibility of deploying the same HYbrid4 technology into different market segments, in different body shapes, etc…, regardless of the type of internal combustion engine used.

A real breakthrough in terms of reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while improving dynamic performance levels, providing four-wheel drive and an electric only mode, HYbrid4 technology brings a number of benefits without compromises.

Furthermore, the driveability, safety and eco-efficiency of the system are based on simple, reasonable and consistent technological choices.

The Peugeot 3008 Crossover was chosen as the first application of this innovative technology.

The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 – In Detail

2.0 litre HDi FAP 163 bhp diesel engine
With a capacity of 1997 cm³, this Euro 5 engine develops a maximum power of 163 bhp at 3750 rpm and a maximum torque of 300Nm at 1580 rpm. To obtain this level of performance it uses Peugeot’s latest generation ECCS (Extreme Conventional Combustion System) combustion chamber design, a variable-geometry low-inertia turbocharger, a high-pressure injection pump allowing a maximum pressure of 2000 bar and solenoid injectors with eight apertures.

Naturally this is combined with the latest generation “octosquare” Eolys additive-enhanced diesel particulate emission filter (FAP) system.

Electronically-controlled 6-speed manual gearbox (BMP6)
The HDi diesel engine is mated to an electronically-controlled manual six-speed sequential gearbox:

In automatic mode its electronic control helps provide significant savings in fuel consumption, compared to a traditional automatic gearbox or even a traditional manual gearbox
It offers real driving satisfaction derived from the possibility of choosing the gear change mode at any time – manual or automatic – with either the gear lever or via controls behind the steering wheel
The gear change quality of the gearbox has been enhanced with HYbrid4 technology, as the rear electric motor is activated during gear changes to improve the smoothness of the operation, and sustains drive in between gear changes.

Latest-generation STOP & START system
This system places the HDi diesel engine in standby when the vehicle is at a standstill (at traffic lights, a stop sign or in a traffic jam, etc) and when the vehicle is being driven in electric-only mode. It significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions in urban driving conditions while also enabling.the HDi diesel engine to be restarted instantly and smoothly, when required.

The “high voltage” STOP & START system has a maximum output of 8 kW and can generate enough energy to supply the power requirements for the rear electric motor if required (four-wheel drive mode).

Rear suspension
To ensure a dynamic performance on a par with Peugeot’s reputable road holding standards, the rear electric module also includes a multi-arm rear suspension within which are housed the electric motor and the reduction gearbox.

ESP
The ESP system fitted to the 3008 HYbrid4 incorporates an “improved traction control system” (ASR) able to exploit the car’s four-wheel drive capabilities to the full on challenging surfaces. The performance of the system can be enhanced by the fitment of optional 16” ‘Mud & Snow’ tyres.

Electric motor
The synchronous permanent magnet electric motor is located at the rear of the vehicle. It provides a constant 27 bhp, with a peak output of 37 bhp. It generates a constant torque of 100 Nm, or a peak of 200 Nm when necessary.

PTMU (Power Train Management Unit)
The PTMU is the electronic control unit that automatically manages the different operating modes of the HDi diesel engine and the electric motor, programmed to optimise fuel consumption.

An inverter and a converter are used to control the electric power. The inverter controls the torque of the electric motor by regulating the electrical current supplied from the high-voltage battery pack. It operates in a voltage range of between 150 and 270 volts. The converter reduces the 200 volts from the high-voltage battery pack into 12 volts to supply the vehicle’s onboard systems.

On the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 all these components have been made as compact as possible to optimise the installation and weight effect in the vehicle.

High-voltage battery pack
The Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are located under the boot floor, near the electric motor. The high-voltage battery pack is in addition to the standard 12V battery under the bonnet, which carries on performing its normal duties.

In the medium term, this battery technology remains the most appropriate in terms of cost and industrialisation for vehicles produced in large volumes.

Energy recovery
An energy recovery system (the electric motor becomes a generator) enables the kinetic energy created by the vehicle to be transformed into electrical energy to recharge the Ni-MH batteries during deceleration (release of the accelerator pedal and during braking). This recovery system enables the driver to re-deploy the “free” (Kinetic) energy to reduce fuel consumption accordingly.

Man-machine interface
A 7” 16/9 colour screen or a multi-function display, according to the car’s specification, informs the driver in real time of the operating status of the hybrid power train. It also shows, for a given journey, operating times in different modes and the status of the battery charge.

On the instrument panel the left-hand dial indicates the percentage of power used or recovered during phases of braking or deceleration. Different scales indicate the battery status: Charge, Eco (optimal operating range), Power, Boost (maximum use jointly with the HDi diesel engine).

Suppliers
To develop its HYbrid4 technology, the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group has teamed up with suppliers offering the best expertise in each field. Based on the manufacturer’s technical specifications, BOSCH has provided its expertise with respect to the electric motor, the power electronics, the reversible high-voltage alternator / generator and other systems managing the dialogue between these components, the braking and trajectory correction systems (ABS and ESP). Similarly, SANYO has provided its extensive knowledge in the field of Ni-MH high-voltage batteries.

A distinctive design
The new Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 is distinguished by its cutting-edge technology, combining responsible driving and driving enjoyment, but also by its specific styling.

At the front, Peugeot’s latest design cues have been adapted to match the 3008’s generous dimensions and to mark a break with existing models. The headlamps now have an integral bar of LEDs providing a daytime lighting function and accentuate the 3008’s appearance. The 3008 HYbrid4 also proudly wears the Marque’s new Lion badge on its bonnet.

At the rear, the rear spoiler has a two-tone finish with a high gloss black section, helping to differentiate it from the other 3008 models in the range, as do the chrome badges which decorate the sides and rear of the car.

Interior
Inside its roomy architecture, the driving position bears all the hallmarks of a top-of-the-range vehicle, or even that of an aircraft cockpit. An expansive fascia panel, controls within easy hand’s reach and an ergonomic centre console clearly separate the territory of the “pilot”. Combined with a raised and dominating driving position it has everything in place to reward its drivers and offer a range of new driving experiences not previously found in a conventional hybrid vehicle.

Distinctive materials are deployed throughout to accentuate the Crossover feel and explore new avenues of expression. This is true in particular of the new and specific Guérande & Tramontane two-tone leather finish which subtly combines bright pale grey on the seat cushions with a black finish on the sides of the seats.

The gear lever with its modern and elegant design is a key feature of the HYbrid4 technology. It enhances the technological ambience in the same way as the 7” colour display which provides information on the flow of energy. A specific steering wheel bearing the signature HYbrid4 adds a touch of exclusivity to the car.

“Multiflex” interior
Due to its intelligent “Multiflex” interior and clever integration of the batteries and the innovative rear suspension, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 can also be transformed to offer a considerable load capacity under the parcel shelf of 420 litres (362 dm3 VDA), with 66 litres (29 dm3 VDA) available under the boot floor.

The split lower tailgate opens to reveal a boot with a flat floor equipped with longitudinal securing rings that exude quality and strength. From the boot, a rear seat folding system, controlled by switches mounted on the load area side trims, allow the seats in the second row to be folded automatically, ‘as if by magic’.

Combined with the folding front passenger seat, the 3008 HYbrid4 offers a perfectly flat floor from the tailgate to the fascia panel. This frees up a gigantic 1501 litre compartment that is easy to load.

Driving aids:
Comfortably seated behind the steering wheel, drivers will note among the equipment at their disposal certain references to the world of aviation.

For example, to ensure that the driver never needs to take an eye off the road ahead, and as in a jet aircraft, essential driving information is projected onto a retractable transparent panel which cleverly extends from the instrument panel. The Head-Up Display system can be adjusted by means of toggle switches.

These switches, located above the centre console, add a further touch of style to the in-car ambience. They also control another original item of equipment – the Distance Alert system. As its name implies, this function helps the driver to keep aware of the safe distance from the vehicle in front, according to the 3008’s speed.

Another item of equipment that helps to ensure maximum driving convenience is the Parallel Park Assist (PPA). This system assesses the size of a space during parking manoeuvres and determines the possibility of parking in it.

Similarly, the electric handbrake coupled with the Hill Assist function, helps the driver during manoeuvres but also optimises the interior space within the vehicle.

Finally, a latest-generation satellite navigation system helps to guide users on their travels.

The Peugeot Connect 3-D Media Navigation (NG4) includes all the benefits of the Marque’s existing satellite navigation systems. These include a juke-box function, linked to a hard disc, Peugeot Connect services, GSM function, a USB connector, a DVD player, a Bluetooth® system and a display which shows specific buildings in full 3D.

The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 is a Crossover with an exceptional technological content offering unique versatility and safety, unrivalled driving enjoyment and CO2 emissions of a very low level. Peugeot’s choice of the diesel hybrid demonstrates that it is possible to combine uncompromising environmental demands with driving experiences not previously available in a hybrid vehicle.

The 3008 HYbrid4 will be produced in France (in Sochaux and Mulhouse) and marketed in the spring of 2011 in Europe.

Porsche has launched its all new 2011 Cayenne in the Indian market soon after it was launched internationally at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. We were the first Indian blog to have uncovered the details of the new Cayenne for you here.

A total of five Cayenne variants have been launched which includes the diesel and also for the first time in India, a hybrid with prices ranging from Rs 59.22 Lakhs for the Diesel topping at a whopping Rs 1.27 Crores for the uber powerful turbo model.

The new 2011 Porsche Caynne overall proportions are bigger than the outgoing model along with an increased wheelbase by 40 mm but is still a whopping 180 kgs lighter. Much of the weight loss is attributed to generous use of aluminium in its construction  and swapping the old 6 speed gearbox and 4X4 transfer case for an all new 8-speed automatic transmission, which alone saved 60kgs in weight.

Porsche has also upped the game inside with more room for the rear seat passengers, better quality overall and 670 liters of boot capacity. On the outside, the styling is now sleeker, subtle and pleasing to the eye.

Of all the powerplants, the hybrid sounds the most interesting as far as Indian market is concerned. The hybrid variant comes with a supercharged 3.0 liter V6 which is combined with an electric motor to take the combined power output to 375 bhp and a peak torque output of 59 kgm available from as low as 1000 rpm! It also emits just 193 g/km of CO2 and a combined fuel consumption rating of 8.2 liter/100 kms.

Eagerly anticipated new generation Porsche Cayenne makes its national debut

New Porsche Cayenne arrives at Porsche Centre Mumbai

Mumbai. A long awaited model has finally arrived. Precision Cars India, the official Porsche importer for India, unveils the second generation Porsche Cayenne at Porsche Centre Mumbai today.

As a premiere for the Porsche brand this model is offered as a hybrid version, the Cayenne S Hybrid. A highly sophisticated parallel full hybrid drive ensures fuel consumption of just 8.2 litres/100 kilometres with CO2 emissions of just 193 g/km. The Cayenne S Hybrid combines the performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder running on much less fuel.

Based on the manufacturer’s principle of “Porsche Intelligent Performance”, all Cayenne vehicles offer more power on less fuel, greater efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Compared with the former generation, fuel consumption is down by up to 23 per cent making the new models to trendsetters in their respective segments.

These objectives result from the introduction of the new Tiptronic S eight-speed automatic transmission with Auto-Start-Stop and a wide spread of gear ratios, thermal management on the engine and transmission cooling circuit, on-board network recuperation, variable engine cut-off and intelligent lightweight construction.

Thanks to its special combination of materials for optimum weight as well as changes in the overall concept of the vehicle such as the Cayenne’s new active and extra light all-wheel drive, weight is down considerably, for example on the Cayenne S by 180 kilos. The lighter body weight did not prevent further improvements in product substance and an even higher standard of safety.

Benefiting from these features and new technologies, the new Cayenne offers even more driving pleasure both on-road and off-road, combined with even greater everyday driving qualities as well as enhanced comfort. The completely new, sporty yet elegant design of the new model integrates the 2010 Cayenne even more closely into the overall range of Porsche cars.

Extra space inside and greater variability is ensured by the wheelbase now 40 mm longer. In all, the new Cayenne is 48 mm longer than its predecessor. The eye-catching cockpit-like interior clearly derived from the Porsche Panamera, can now be also found in the new Cayenne with a centre console between the two front seats. For maximum comfort also in the back, the rear seat bench now moves fore-and-aft by 160 millimetres, with the backrest angle adjusting to three different settings.

The range starts with the 3.6-litre V6 Cayenne with an increased engine power to 300 bhp. With its eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission fuel consumption is down from the former model by no less than 20 per cent to 9.9 ltr/100 km

The Cayenne Diesel with its 240 bhp three-litre V6 likewise reduces fuel consumption by 20 per cent, down from 9.3 to 7.4 ltr/100 km.

Fuel efficiency is also up significantly on the high-torque Cayenne S with its 4.8-litre V8 power unit, in this case by 23 per cent to 10.5 litres/100 kilometres. At the same time the new engine delivers 400 bhp maximum output instead of the former 385 bhp.

The most powerful Cayenne Turbo, with its 500 bhp 4.8-litre V8 biturbo consumes now just 11.5 ltr/100 km representing also a reduction in fuel consumption of 23 per cent.

At 193 g/km, the Cayenne S Hybrid is the cleanest version of the Cayenne with the lowest level of emissions. In the intelligent interaction of the three-litre supercharged V6 and the electric motor, the Cayenne S Hybrid focuses on maximum efficiency from the overall system. Depending on driving conditions, the vehicle operates with one drive unit by itself or with both drive units working together. In this context the 47 hp electric motor is of course the ideal partner for the 333 hp compressor engine with its high torque at low speeds. Together, the two drive units deliver maximum system output of 380 bhp and peak torque of 580 Nm at just 1,000 rpm, with the same kind of performance as the Cayenne S with its V8 power unit.

The two drive units are connected to one another by a separator clutch. Given a desired slow speed, for example in a residential area, the driver can cover short distances on electric power alone at a speed of up to 60 km/h, free of emissions and hardly any noise.

To ensure fast acceleration when setting off, the electric motor also serves as an additional boost. Intelligent management of the separator clutch makes the transition among the hybrid-specific driving modes comfortable and quick. When no further power is required, the combustion engine may be fully disengaged from the drivetrain at speeds of up to 156 km/h. In this so called sailing mode the drag forces exerted by the combustion engine and their braking effect are eliminated in the interest of lower drive resistance and fuel consumption.

“The new Cayenne features a completely new exterior and newly defined luxury interior. Yet in today’s world, it’s clearly not enough to pour on more power; there must be a clear, simultaneous improvement in fuel consumption. We have optimized this objective to a maximum by reducing CO2 emissions of up to 26% and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 23% less. This car clearly brings a new dimension to the SUV market”, said Deesch Papke, Managing Director of Porsche Middle East and Africa.

Ashish Chordia, Director, Porsche India, emphasized on the new features that meet the customer’s demand in the local market. “We are extremely proud to launch the new Cayenne. This model represents the perfect balance between elegant design, powerful driving dynamics and a high level of comfort. Despite all of this, efficiency has significantly improved making this model an outstanding trendsetter in its segment.”

“We already have a strong order bank for the new Cayenne and with new Porsche Centres set to open in Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, we expect it to grow even more”, added Chordia.

Auto Bild, the popular German magazine has managed to get the leaked frontal image of the 2011 Volkswagen Passat which is expected to debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show later this year.

The new Passat follows Volkswagen’s new design language as seen on the new 2011 Touareg and the recently unveiled 2011 Phaeton sedan.

The styling goes from rounded to edgy with bold squarish lines and the new front end treatment. The new Passat will come with a range of engines starting with the base 1.2 liter TSi unit with 105 bhp of maximum power and 2.0 liter TFSi 211 bhp engine for the top of the line variant. Volkswagen is also planning a hybrid variant which would come in later.

Our friends at autoblog have managed to shoot a few spy pictures of the upcoming Land Rover LRX which is expected to debut in 2011.

The baby SUV from Land Rover stable was first shown as a concept at the North American International Auto Show in 2008 as a cross-coupe designed to be efficient, luxurious and capable offroad.  The LRX will most probably wear the Range Rover badge (hint: premium pricing) and will include company’s efficiency enhancing e_Terrain technologies.

Although heavily disguised in the spy images, the styling is very true to the concept and in our view would be one of the best looking vehicle to come out from Land Rover in a long time. The new LRX will come in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive flavors and will also feature a hybrid version in the lineup.

Toyota Prius Hybrid @ Auto Expo 2010

The world’s largest selling hybrid car Toyota Prius has received a warm response in the Indian market with 80 confirmed bookings already. Toyota had kept a modest target of selling 200 units this year but with this initial response the company expects the demand to far out strip the supply.

Toyota Prius was launched at the 2010 Delhi Auto Expo with prices starting from Rs 26.55 Lakhs.

“We are happy with the demand for the car and believe that once the cars hit the road demand will go up further. Bookings are robust and should go beyond the 200 cars that we have asked for from TMC, though we are not likely to get any more cars this year. Next year we will deifinitely order more cars… maybe 400 or 500″ said Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director (sales), Toyota Kirloskar Motor.

The Prius is very popular in the United States with the Hollywood green brigade but unlike U.S. us most of the initial demand for the car has come from industrialists and entrepreneurs. Toyota believes that demand from the Bollywood would pick up shortly.

Toyota has so far sold more than 1.5 million units of Prius worldwide making it the most successful hybrid car in the world.

Following on from where we left, the World car of the year awards have been announced and the most coveted of them all has gone to the VW Polo.

The all conquering hatch from Volkswagen beat the competition in the form of Toyota Prius and Mercdes Benz E Class to take home the World car of the year 2010 trophy.

The ‘Green’ car of the year awards went to Volkswagen’s line of diesel powered BlueMotion vehicles beating the likes of Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.
