For all the motorsports fans who have ignored for long, India may host a MotoGP race in the 2012 season of the championship if reports in the international media are to be believed.

The race will happen on the same track which has been built for the 2011 Indian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Greater Noida on the outskirts of Delhi. The track has been added to the 2011 Formula 1 calender subject to homologation and its promoters Jaypee Group are also keen to host a MotoGP race in the near future.

International Race Teams Association boss Mike Trimby told MCN recently: “There is big interest in India. They are building a new circuit from scratch with bikes in mind and the Indian promoter is keen to have MotoGP.”

Gabriele Del Torchio, Ducati’s CEO has apparently spoken to Dorna’s (Dorna is the group which controls MotoGP) CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta about bringing MotoGP to India. ‘If this event can happen in Qatar, China, Malaysia and Australia, I think India also has a great chance, with vast improvements in infrastructure and F1 circuit plans firming up. If all goes well, we shall have a full-fledged motorcycle racing season in India soon,’ he said.

2012 is also the year when new 1000cc four stroke rules apply.

India’s youngest motorcycle maker Mahindra 2Wheelers is all set to enter the world’s oldest motorsport event MotoGP starting next season!

The company will be participating in the 125cc category which will give the brand a big push and will also help company’s marketing & brand building efforts.

“This category (125cc MotoGP) is relevant to people in India as bulk of the bikes are in the 110cc and 125cc,” said Anand Mahindra , vice-chairman and managing director of the Mahindra & Mahindra group.

“The advertising in the recent Football World Cup (for the group’s technology arm Mahindra Satyam) made us understand the power of global branding and benefited the group. So this is an interesting sequential chapter to our global branding effort,” he added.

Mahindra entered the 2 wheeler business last year by acquiring Kinetic and since then has introduced gearless scooters and more recently new bikes, the 300cc Mojo and the 110cc Stallio.

“Since we are new in the motorcycle business, participating in such an event will help build the brand equity, showcase technology and will be a testing ground for technology that we will offer to Indian and global consumers,” said Mr Mahindra.

“It will enhance our entire automotive range, auto components and IT domains,” he added.

“We will be taking over an existing racing team and call them `Mahindra Racing Team’,” he said.

The company has already submitted the names of two bikers to the International Road-Racing Teams Association and Dorma Sports, which is responsible  for the administration and organization of all MotoGP Grand Prix races and is hoping to hear from them by this month end.

We already know how the Indian F1 GP track which will host its first race in 2011 looks like but how about a hot lap around the circuit with Force India F1 car screaming its guts out at every turn! Well read on!

Designed by legendary designer Hermann Tilke, the 5.1 kilometers long undulating track will have a total of 16 corners and a long straight between turn 3 and 4 which will see F1 cars screaming past at over 300 kmph.

A grand stand with a capacity of 13,000 will overlook the turn 10 and turn 11 giving the F1 fans an opportunity to be a part of the action. The stunning waved grand stand will house a further 30,000 fans bringing in the total estimated capacity at 120,000 spectators.

Force India F1 driver Adrian Sutil has topped the timesheet in the first free practice session for the Formula 1 2010 season at Bahrain Circuit in Sakhir.

The Mercedes Benz powered VJM03 showed stunning pace enabling Adrian to finish first ahead of the second placed Ferrari of Fernando Alonso which was three-tenths slower for most part of the session only coming back in the final hot lap of the day finishing one-tenths slower. Renault Robert Kubica finished at third position ahead of Alonso’s team mate Felipe Massa with McLaren’s Jenson Button rounding off the top five drivers of the day.

The other McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton finished sixth followed by Force India’s Vitantonio Luizzi which was just .03 of a second slower confirming the genuine pace of the 2010 Force India F1 car.

Seven times world F1 chamption Michael Schumacher finished a decent 10th, two places behind his team mate Nico Rosberg who finished on 8th position.

Vijay Mallya owned Force India F1 team is on an upward climb ever since the pole position at Spa last year which saw Fisichella finishing second behind Kimi’s Ferrari.

Hispania racing’s Karun Chandok who will be making his F1 debut this season failed to record a hot lap due to a mechanical failure.
