Chevrolet has announced the official fuel economy numbers of the 2011 Cruze Eco and they are good… segment leading good.

The car delivers an EPA estimated 42 mpg for the highway run and 28 mpg for the city run (manual transmission models) beating competitors like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla  and even hybrids like Nissan Altima Hybrid and the Toyota Camry Hybrid!

Chevrolet Cruze Eco comes powered by a Ecotec 1.4 liter turbocharged petrol engine delivering 140 ps of maximum power and 200 nm of maximum torque between 1850 – 4900 rpm mated to a 6-speed manual transmission for ideal spread of power and torque.

The car comes with an aerodynamic body kit which has been developed and refined using extensive wind tunnel testing. The aero kit consists of an upgraded front fascia and grille which features “closeouts” to improve air flow, a lower front air dam extension, a rear spoiler, lowered ride height and underbody panels that smoothen air flow beneath the car. As a result the drag has been reduced by 10% with a co-efficient of drag of only 0.298 making it the most aerodynamically efficient car in its class.

Chevrolet engineer also worked extensively on the mass optimization  to reduce weight which is 1,365 kgs compared to 1,462 kgs for the Cruze 1LT to improve the fuel consumption even further.

The same Ecotec 1.4 liter turbocharged engine is expected to power the Cruze petrol which will be launched in India shortly.

New Chevrolet Cruze Eco Achieves Segment-Leading 42 MPG On The Highway
Hybrid-Like Fuel Economy Starts at $18,895; Goes on Sale in January
DETROIT – The official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco are in and they’re good. Segment-leading good. It delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models), with equally impressive city fuel economy of 28 mpg.

Cruze Eco’s highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors – including 23 percent greater highway fuel economy than the Honda Civic – as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models. In fact, it’s better than Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.

“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”

The Cruze Eco carries an MSRP of $18,895 (including destination charge). It goes on sale in January.

To achieve its segment-leading fuel economy, Cruze’s engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements. The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car’s overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models.

“We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Russell. “Our engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.”

Aero enhancements

Aerodynamic improvements over non-Eco manual-transmission models contributed approximately six mpg to the Cruze’s EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway fuel economy. Many were developed and refined in more than 500 hours of wind-tunnel testing of the Chevy Volt, which shares a core architecture with the Cruze. Examples include the upper grille, which has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics, a lower front air dam extension, a rear spoiler, a lowered ride height and underbody panels that smooth airflow beneath the car.

The Eco model also features an all-new technology in the compact segment: a lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow. Another contributor to reduced drag is the use of ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires (used with lightweight wheels), which are also used on the Volt.

As a result of the aero enhancements, aerodynamic drag was reduced by 10 percent over a non-Eco model, with a coefficient of drag of 0.298. That places Cruze at the top of the class for mainstream compact cars.

Mass optimization

More than 42 changes were made on the Eco to reduce weight. It weighs in at 3,009 pounds (1,365 kg), compared to the 3,223 pounds (1,462 kg) of the Cruze 1LT. The diet program for the Cruze challenged engineers to look at all aspects of the vehicle’s construction, including hundreds of weld flanges on the vehicle. They were reduced 1 mm to 2 mm in length, which saved several pounds, while the sheet metal gauge thickness was reduced by about 0.1 mm in select components. This saved weight while preserving structural integrity.

Lighter wheels and tires are used on the Eco. They’re stylish, polished 17-inch alloy units with Goodyear tires that weigh only 36.5 pounds (16.6 kg) apiece. That’s 5.3 pounds (2.4 kg) less than the 16-inch wheel/tires of the Cruze 1LT for a complete savings to the vehicle of 21.2 pounds (9.6 kg).

Efficient powertrain

Cruze Eco is powered by power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The transmission’s gearing is optimized for the model’s specific 17-inch wheel/tire combination and includes aggressive ratios for first and second gear coupled with a highly efficient, “taller” sixth-gear ratio for highway driving. That means engine rpm is reduced on the highway, which in turn reduces fuel consumption. A six-speed automatic transmission is available, with EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 26 city and 37 highway.

The Ecotec 1.4L turbo’s power ratings are 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold, for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility.

The engine also features premium design elements that give it world-class smoothness and durability while also contributing to the Cruze Eco’s lower curb weight. They include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts and a plastic intake manifold.

Comparing the competitors

As a result of aerodynamic improvements, mass reduction and powertrain optimization, the Cruze Eco offers the best fuel economy in the compact segment, while delivering hybrid-like fuel economy without the hybrid price. The second new offering from Mahindra 2Wheelers which will be launched tomorrow is called the Stallio.

Unlike the Mojo which is positioned as a high powered stylish bike for the enthusiasts, Stallio is a 110cc commuter bike which will bring in the volumes. The bike is powered by a 106.7 cc 4 stroke air cooled engine delivering 7.3 bhp of maximum power @ 7500 rpm and 8 nm of maximum torque @ 5500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 4-speed transmission with one down and three up pattern.

Other features of the Stallio include contemporary visor, multi reflector front headlamp, LED tail light, sturdy grab rails, full digital instrument console, optional electric start, sung seats, fully flush fuel tank cap, convenient multi utility box, alloy wheels and 5-step adjustable telescopic rear suspension.

The bike will be available in total of five colors – Black, Blue, Green, Red and Yellow.

As we told you earlier, Hyundai has world debutted the facelifted new gen i10 in the Indian market.

The new i1o comes with updated interiors, long list of standard equipments and upgraded engines with more power and torque and better fuel efficiency. First up are the engines. The 1.1 liter iRDe unit now develops 69 ps of maximum power @ 5500 rpm and 100 nm of maximum torque, thanks to bigger intake and exhaust valves and special coating on the pistons. The ARAI rated fuel efficiency figure is 19.86 kmpl.

The 1.2 liter Kappas engine now gets variable valve timing which hasn’t increased the maximum power and torque per se but the addition will improve the driveability and performance throughout the revv range according to Hyundai. The ARAI rated efficiency figures for Kappa2 is 20.36 kmpl which is more what the smaller 1.1 iRDe manages! Impressive!

Regulars at autoholiks would already know the exterior styling changes but let us give a quick run down again. The front gets a new hexagonal grille the lower part of which doubles up as an air dam and smartly detailed headlamps that are not only more stylish but will also offer better illumination. The rest of the car is pretty much the same except for the slightly redesigned tail lamps.

The interiors get new seat fabric and two tone brown and beige dashboard with silver coated central console, air con controls and air vent surrounds, digital fuel gauge, blue illumination for the instrument console and a gear change indicator on the LCD screen above the odometer. Hyundai also loaded the new i10 with extra features such as MP3/CD compatible music system with USB and AUX IN, bluetooth connectivity with steering mounted controls, reverse parking sensors, keyless entry, foldable key just like the i20, heights adjustable drive seat and even electrically heated outside rear view mirrors with integrated indicators! Phew!

With its combination of new features and fuel efficient powerful engines, i10 is all set to become even bigger seller for Hyundai in India. The new i10 is priced at Rs 3.48 Lakhs for the base 1.1 model to Rs 5.91 Lakhs for the top end 1.2 Kappa2 Automatic, all prices Ex-Showroom, Delhi.

As we reported earlier, Maruti Suzuki has launched 5 CNG powered vehicles powered by company’s flagship CNG engine technology ‘intelligent-Gas Port Injection’ (i-GPI). The models include base variants of Alto, Eeco 5-Seater, WagonR LXi, Estilo LXi and SX4 VXi and were unveiled by Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) Environment and Forests in the presence of senior government dignitaries and Maruti Suzuki management team.

The i-GPI technology developed by Maruti R&D team, integrates CNG technology with the company’s range of engines and products to bring dual benefits – minimal loss in power and high fuel economy.  The i-GPI technology offers dual ECU’s – one for the Petrol and one for the CNG and uses seperate injectors for each cylinder and direct injection technology ensuring improved and consistent performance under various driving conditions. The quantity of gas to be injected is controlled by a dedicated ECU which leads to more efficient fuel usage.

The engine parts for the CNG models are made of special materials to deliver longer engine life and enhanced performance. The suspension has also been reinforced to take the extra weight and special stainless steel pre-formed pipes and joints have been used for 100% leak protection. Maruti Suzuki has tested each of the cars fitted with the i-GPI technology for around 2 lakh kilometers in varied terrains in addition to over 3,000 hours of bench testing to validate the design and performance. That apart the CNG cylinder frame design aids easy removal of the spare tyre and the kit also comes with an easy change over switch and an automode option. A multifunction lamp also lets you know if there is any problem.

The factory fitted CNG model come with full warranty benefits including the extended warranty.

The i-GPI CNG range includes SX4, WagonR, Alto, Estilo and Eeco and have been launched in Delhi, Gujrat and Mumbai.

The country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki today unveiled its flagship CNG engine technology, ‘intelligent-Gas Port Injection’ or i-GPI on five popular models. The CNG vehicles were unveiled by Mr. Jairam Ramesh, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) Environment and Forests in the presence of senior government dignitaries and Maruti Suzuki management team. Steps in Environment care Maruti Suzuki has the distinction of introducing a host of environment friendly programmes ahead of government regulations and the industry. This includes implementing End of Life Vehicle (ELV) programme ¿ where harmful elements like Lead, Cadmium, Chromium and Mercury are not used in making vehicles. Maruti Suzuki produced the first BS-IV and E-10 compliant engines much ahead of regulations coming to force in the country. Developing a factory-fitted CNG engine is another effort by the Company to contribute to a clean environment. Technology up The factory fitted CNG vehicles use advanced Intelligent Gas Port Injection technology. Maruti Suzuki R&D team has integrated this technology with the Company’s range of engines and products to bring the benefits to the consumers. In a leap over alternative aftermarket options, the i-GPI technology is a Dual ECU (Engine Control Unit) technology. This highly reliable system delivers accurate amounts of gas to the engine thus ensuring improved and consistent performance under various driving conditions. The i-GPI technology uses separate injectors for each cylinder. Based on inputs from the ECU, metered CNG quantity is injected to the engine through gas ports. The quantity of CNG required for different driving conditions is controlled by the dedicated ECU, leading to more efficient fuel usage. Similar to the usual pre-launch evaluation, each of the cars with i-GPI CNG technology has been extensively tested for around 2 lakh kilometers in varied terrains. In addition, over 3,000 hours of bench tests have validated the design and performance to bring unmatchable combination of performance and reliability for the customers. While working on the new CNG technology, Maruti Suzuki engineers focused on critical aspects of safety, reliability and performance.

CNG for the future Government of India has committed to developing the infrastructure and network of the CNG stations across the country. This is in line with government’s aim to reduce the dependence on import of fossil fuels. Maruti Suzuki have launched its new small car, the Alto K10 today in New Delhi.

The new Alto K10 comes with new 1.0 Liter K Series engine and refreshed interiors and exteriors. The ARAI certified economy figure is 20.2 KMPL.

Maruti Suzuki have launched the new Alto K10 at a ceremony held today in New Delhi.

The new Alto K10 comes with refreshed styling inside out and will continue to co-exist with the standard Alto which will continue selling in its present form. The front has new ‘eagle eye’ headlamps with new bumper, new fog lamps mounts and larger grille. The rear is more rounded with shapely tail lamps and number plate which has now moved to the boot door.The interiors are now dual tone and come with integarted headrests on the front seats. The VXi variant also comes with tachometer, internally adjustable rear view mirrors and front power windows apart from the standard power steering and A/C. The new Alto K10 is also longer by 125mm due to longer snout up at the front to accommodate the bigger engine and also comes with wider 155 section tyres mounted on larger 13 inch steel rims.

The biggest change however in under the hood. Gone is the wheezy and underpowered 800 cc unit from the yore which has been replaced by a throughly modern and high tech 1.0 liter 3 cylinder K-Series engine which develops 67 bhp of maximum power @ 6200 rpm and 90 nm of maximum torque in the K10. The higher power output coupled with low kerb weight of the Alto K10 means that power to weight ratio now shadows that of the much bigger SX4! If thats not all the new Alto also has ARAI certified fuel economy of 20.2 kmpl. So in a nut shell not only is the new Alto more powerful, its more economical as well! Talking about having your cake and eating it too!

The new Alto K10 has been priced at Rs 3.03 Lakhs for the LXi and Rs 3.16 Lakhs for the VXi variant, Ex-Showroom, Delhi, making it excellent value for money.

As we reported earlier, Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch 5 new CNG fueled variants of its cars by the middle of this month.

CNG fueled variants of Alto, Estilo, Wagon-R, Rtiz and SX4 will be launched which are expected to come with Sequential CNG kits for negligible power loss and better economy. Small car buyers are extremely sensitive to price and running costs and the company wants to make its cars affordable for the middle class and lower income middle class income groups.

The move will also help Maruti claw back its market share which has dropped from 50 percent to 47.5 percent in the first quarter. The company is hoping that move to CNG will improve sales by upto 25% especially in the bigger metro’s where there’s ample availability of the cheaper fuel.

This is a good news for the end consumer which not only get minimal loss in performance but also cheaper running cost with greater environment credentials.

According to a senior engineering resource, Mercedes Benz is reportedly working on 9 Speed Automatic transmission that will leap frog the ZF 8-speed units being used by Audi and BMW.

Christened the 9G-Tronic, the better spread nine ratios are said to deliver huge improvements in fuel economy and lowered CO2 emissions. The source also mentioned that development of gearbox with more than 9 ratios is unlikely. Mercedes engineers think that nine ratios is the maximum that is technically possible as well as being the most that end consumers will be able to cope with.

The new gearbox will be used on large displacement engines and will most likely debut on the 2012 Mercedes S Class that is currently under development and will further trickle down to higher end E-Class models as well.

The Government has also hiked the central exise duty on non-petroleum products across the board from 8 to 10% and the basic duty on crude and petroleum products.

Other news concerning the automobile industry is the partial rollback of the stimulus by hiking the ad valorem component of exise duty on large cars and multi utility vehicles by 2 percent to 22 percent.
