Nissan no longer wants to be a “me too” in the burgeoning Indian car market. After inaugurating the brand new Chennai plant which will manufacture Micra, the company has made its intentions clear to go the CKD way for Teana and X-Trail in India.
The X-Trail and Teana are right now fully imported as a CBU (Completely Built Units) resulting in a duty of more than 110% which not only results in higher initial purchase cost but also higher after sales service costs. With the CKD (Completely Knocked Down Kit) route the company is looking at assembling them locally which entails far lower duty.
The move will reduce the price of the Teana from the current Rs. 25 Lakhs to a much more palpable Rs. 18 Lakhs and around Rs. 16 Lakhs for the X-Trail which right now retails at Rs 22 Lakhs. The price reduction will let Nissan compete effectively in the D-segment of the Indian car market which already has formidable players like Honda Accord, Skoda Superb which was also launched recently with manual transmission and further reduced price while the X-Trail will be able to compete with Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavor and Toyota Fortuner.
