If there’s one car which even Suzuki’s CEO admits is their mainstay in India, its the Swift and its cousin Swift Dzire. Maruti Suzuki’s first all new model in more than a decade was launched in May 2005 and has been a runaway success ever since.
The popularity of the Suzuki hatch was also helped in no small measure by the brilliant little 1.3 Multijet errrr… DDiS Diesel engine sourced from Fiat, which was company’s first ever diesel in the Indian market. The potent little engine gave the Swift sparkling performance, akin to its character and Fiat technology behind meant that it was pretty fuel efficient as well. The combination went on to become an even bigger success and the Swift became a cult brand in India so much so that Maruti sold largest no. of Swift ever sold in single month just recently in December 2009, almost 5 years after its launch in India! The achievement becomes even more impressive when you consider the fact that the sales have come at a time when the competition in the Indian hatchback market is intense in the form of Fiat’s brilliant Punto, Tata’s all rounder Indica Vista, Chevrolet’s super value for money Beat while Ford’s Figo and Volkswagen’s Polo had already been announced for launch shortly! Oh lemme also add that Swift is also one of the priciest car it in its segment considering the age and technology used! Its safe to conclude then India can’t have too much of the Swift and we still lap it up in thousands every month! To Maruti’s credit, they have kept the Swift young and appealing by the way of making cosmetic changes and new engines in the form of 1.2 litre K-Series which was introduced just recently before the new Bharat IV emission norms became applicable from April 2010.
If thats not all, enter the all new 2011 Suzuki Swift which could come to Indian shores soon after its international launch in late 2010 or early 2011. The Swift you see in these pictures has been rendered by our friends at themotorreport which have been painstakingly made from numerous spy pictures of the little Suzuki hatch moving around on test.
The car has grown slightly in size which means slightly more generous interior accommodation and the front now adorns the Suzuki’s family look, suitably modified for the Swift, which debutted on the Kizashi sedan which was shown at the just concluded Auto Expo 2010 in New Delhi. The new rear has the same basic profile as the current Swift save for the slightly reprofiled tail lamps, bumper and number plate which has now moved to the hatch door from the bumper.
The new Suzuki Swift is expected to be launched internationally by late 2010 or early 2011 and will come to India soon after. How are we so confident about its launch in India? Well, the changes arent comprehensive enough for Maruti to sell the next generation Swift as an all new model alongside the current generation Swift when its launched.
With the advent of new hatches like the Polo and the soon to be launched Ford Figo, the scoop pricing details of which we published earlier (and if you havent read it still, in one sentence a Fiesta without boot for the price of a Tata Indica Vista!) Maruti would do well for itself to introduce the new Swift as soon as possible in India.
Over to you Maruti Suzuki!
