Auto Swerve Tech Coming In 5 Years Says Mercedes

Mercedes Benz is working on a new technology, Auto Swerve, that can automatically steer around pedestrians to avoid accidents.

The gist of the technology is a car that can think for itself and avoid accidents wherever possbile but like other Mercedes technologies, the system would try and encourage the driver to react first.

Speaking to What Car? Ulrich Mellinghoff, head of safety development at Mercedes explained that in 80% of accidents involving people, just 20% of a car’s frontal area hits the pedestrian which means that it would only take 40-50 cms of movement for a Mercedes to automatically swerve around the pedestrian detected by the car. The sytem is likely to appear in 5 years and is planned to appear in every Mercedes.

Swedish maker Volvo is also developing its own system called CitySafe but its different from Mercedes since it works by applying the brakes rather than making the car swerve.

Speaking on Mercedes’s safety record, Mellinghoff said that it has recently become difficult to find real world accidents involving Mercedes drivers that have been killed or seriously injured but it may be impossible to eliminate all the accidents.
